How-To: Bokeh with Photoshop CS6 and iPhone App "Big Lens"

Hi guys, if you guys are still not sure on how to capture bokeh shots using your phone, you can manually create that effect using Photoshop and some iPhone apps! Today I'll be showing you how you can achieve them with Photoshop CS6, and one of my favorite iPhone camera app.

Step 1: Select an image. (I randomly selected one from google)

Step 2: Open the image in Photoshop.
Step 3: "Unlock" the image.
achieve this by double clicking the layer "background", then selecting "OK"

Step 4: Under "Filter", go to "Blur" > "Field Blur".

A "pin" will then automatically be placed on the center of your image(shown below),
surrounded by an adjustment ring. play around with the placement of the ring,
be it in the center or corner of the image - it gives you different outputs.

Step 5: Adjust the intensity of the effects to your liking. I used the values below for mine

Step 6: Enjoy your picture!

Alternatively, if you do not have Photoshop installed on your computer, you may download some apps such as (tadaa, big lens, picfx, iDarkroom, etc..) that can create bokeh effects too! I personally use Big Lens (SGD$1.28 on the app store) from time to time when I want my bokeh circles to be in a different shape such as hearts and stars.. Especially for my ootd shots in my room and I don't want the whole word to see clothes all over my bedroom floor, haha!

Here's how the app works:
Step 1: Launch the app "Big Lens"
Step 2: Load a photo of your choice > "basic" (will show you how "advance" at step 3)

Step 3: Blur the picture using circle or linear.
Move the red circle shown below to the corner so as to blur the entire image.

Areas within the red circle will be in focus.
pinch with 2 fingers on your screen to make the circle smaller or bigger.

"Advance"
1. You can select the area in which you want to be in focus using the "lasso" tool (in my opinion easier than the brush/eraser tools), or you can just select auto and click the arrow on the top right of the screen.

2. Refine the areas you selected using the "Focus" or "Blur" tool.

Step 4: Select the shape you want your bokeh to be under "lens"

Step 5: Adjust the clarity and size of the bokeh shapes under "Aperture"
Settings I usually use shown below:

Step 6: Use a filter to enhance your image / give it the look and feel you want!

There you have it! A customized bokeh image you created!

Hope you guys have fun venturing into the world of bokeh,
and grow to love it as much as I do.  :)

Much love. x
